Bright coloured batiks are mainly from the coastal cities of Java and are called batik Pesisir. They are characterised by the pretty pastel colours heavily influenced by the Chinese immigrants who settled mainly in northern coastal cities such as Pekalongan and Cirebon.

These batiks are more fashion focused and more commercial unlike the status-signaling, age old symbolism of more historic Indonesian style from the imperial cities of Yogyakarta and Solo which are characterised mainly by their sogan and indigo colours with traditional kraton (palace) motifs such as parang and kawung.
