The Apache AH-64 entered British Army service in the early 2000s, designated the Apache AH1. The Apache quickly became the Army Air Corps’ primary attack helicopter, replacing older Lynx variants in the attack role. It proved itself in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, where it provided close air support, armed reconnaissance, and escort missions. The helicopter’s ability to carry Hellfire missiles, CRV7 rockets, and a 30mm cannon, along with its long-range sensors, made it highly effective.

A major milestone came in 2011 during the Libya campaign, when British Apaches launched strike missions from HMS Ocean — the first time UK attack helicopters were used in combat from the sea.

Since 2021, the British Army has been transitioning from the Apache AH1 to the modernised AH-64E Apache Guardian, with deliveries ongoing. This newer model offers improved sensors, communications, and performance, ensuring the Apache remains central to UK attack aviation for decades to come.
