Vintage Ercol Model 439 Writing Desk Elm Beech

Beautifully crafted and increasingly sought-after example of the Ercol Model 439 writing desk, designed and produced in England during the mid-20th century. Made from solid elm with turned beech legs, this compact desk embodies Ercol’s hallmark simplicity, quality, and elegance.

The warm, honey-toned elm grain of the Vintage Ercol Model 439 Writing Desk Elm Beech surface is complemented by a raised gallery top with twin miniature drawers and an open cubby—perfect for stationery or small accessories. Below, a spacious single drawer features exposed dovetail joints and the original sculpted oval handles.. As with all Ercol furniture from this era, craftsmanship is exceptional, with a focus on functional beauty and longevity.

A lesser-seen model in Ercol’s catalogue, the Mid century Ercol elm and beech desk model 439 is ideal for smaller spaces—whether used as a writing desk, hallway console, or occasional work-from-home station. All drawers open smoothly, and the piece stands sturdy and true on elegantly tapered legs.

Mid century Ercol elm and beech desk - Condition:
Very good vintage condition with only light surface marks and scratches commensurate with age. Structurally sound and ready to use.

The front large drawer knob and the tiny drawer knob have had a break, but have been professionally repaired.

Completey refurbished, taken back to original colour and given a couple of fresh  Coats of OSMO clear satin wax oil, ready to be used and loved again.

📐 Mid century Ercol elm and beech desk - Dimensions:

  • Width: 68.5 cm

  • Depth: 44 cm

  • Height to writing surface: 73 cm

  • Total height: 92 cm

🔍 Provenance:
Sourced from a private collection in rural Derbyshire, where it was originally purchased in the 1960s for a family study. The desk remained in occasional use and was well-preserved over the decades, a testament to the enduring quality and charm of Ercol’s mid-century designs.

It actually does the job pretty well
Style: Lawn Edger/Tool Only
I floundered around for a few minutes, then figured out how to use it, and then made pretty good progress on my overgrown sidewalks. Yes, it uses up batteries but that's because it actually has enough power to do the job, unlike many "homeowner" tools. The handle is long enough so I'm not painfully bent over while using the tool, and it feels solid and stable. One thing I really appreciated is that it doesn't have a typical pointless, awkward "safety" interlock button that you're supposed to keep mashed down with your thumb the whole time - it's a comfortable one-finger trigger. Another good 20v tool from Worx. I'm "in".

Works great!
Style: Lawn Edger/Tool Only
Works great and uses the same batteries that we already had from other works equipment. I do wish the pole was longer.

Good value if you have work batteries.
Style: Lawn Edger/Tool Only
Works well for sidewalk edging. Auto shutoff if the blade hits sidewalk or rock.

This Worx product does not work as well as I hoped, I have many Worx products, but this one I wish I didn’t order.
