Het Gouden Kompas is een fantasy-avontuur dat zich afspeelt in een wereld waarin enorme bepantserde beren de baas zijn, heksen door bevroren luchten vliegen en de zielen van mensen de vorm van pratende dieren aannemen. Deze zielen, oftewel daemon, zijn onlosmakelijk met de mensen verbonden.

In Het Gouden Kompas kun je spelen met Lyra, een jong meisje, samen met haar daemon Pantalaimon, of Pan. Ze reist door de bevroren woestenij van het Noorden. Hier zoekt ze speciale items waarmee ze moet verkennen, ontwijken en misleiden. Ze moet namelijk een vriend redden die is ontvoerd door de mysterieuze organisatie De Lokkers. Lyra kan ook haar daemon gebruiken en samenwerken met in-game personages en onderneemt zo een epische queeste om niet alleen haar wereld, maar ook het onze te redden.

Het tweede speelbare personage is Iorek Byrnison, een grote bepantserde ijsbeer die Lyra bijstaat in haar queeste. Iorek vecht om Lyra te beschermen tijdens hun reizen. Hij gebruikt speciale aanvallen en een rijmechaniek om de vijanden van zich af te slaan.

In Het Gouden Kompas kunnen spelers geheimen en mini-games vrijspelen met behulp van een mysterieus waarheidszeggend gouden kompas: de alethiometer. The Golden Compass heeft dertien enorme locaties om te verkennen. Hieronder bevinden zich een aantal compleet nieuwe gebieden die niet in de film en in het boek voorkomen.

She had 1 best friend I wish we could have seen a little bit more of their friendship in this book. Her relationship with the male characters was good not to contrived or super instantaneous. And we had some fun plot twists that I didn't expect. I wish we had more of a follow up on the situation with her family her background and her mother who was a wench.
