Candy Crush is a phenomenally popular app, and Potion Explosion is the board game that attempts to re-implement it's addictive nature. In the box you will find 80 marbles and a punch board marble dispenser that you have to build along with a huge number of potions.
Once you have set-up the marble dispenser it will fit back in the box fully constructed, so you can just tip the marbles straight in and watch them roll down the five tracks. On your turn you will pick one of the marbles and if two or more marbles of the same colour hit each other, it causes an explosion and you get to take all those marbles too. If that should cause another explosion you take those marbles too and so on.
You'll use these marbles to complete potions of which you can have two at a time. Any completed potions flip over and then offer you a one use power. If you have any marbles left you can store up to three of them for a future turn. Also at any point on your turn you may take a -2 token to take any marble you like, but your will not receive any bonus marbles for explosions caused by this marble.
The key to Potion Explosion is using your potion powers at the right time. Ideally, you want to be completing at least one of your two potions every turn, the more you complete the more powers you have available to use.
At the end of the game you score points for you potions and there are points for set collection too - collecting potions of the same type and one of each of five out of the six types. There are eight different types of potions included in this base game, so there is a little variety outside of the randomness of the marble dispenser.
The new edition is 100% compatible with all previous expansions. It adds in a new plastic dispenser, complete with storage drawer to hold the marbles between sessions.
